The present election of Shri. Meira Kumar to the post of Lok Sabha speaker is significant in three ways.
1. She is the first woman speaker in the history of our Lok Sabha
2. She is the second only person from the Dalit category after Balayogi to assume the post
3. Since the 11th Lok Sabha, the Prime Minister and Speaker are not from the same political party, though they belonged to the same coalition.
She has the requisite credentials to be in the speaker's post but her unequivocal stand is yet to be seen. It is a theoritical construct that speaker should be impartial and work towards the fuifilment of ideals which make the parliamentary form of government a success.
We hope that she is going to discharge her duties without any undue advantage to the ruling coalition.
